I’m tired, I’m headed off to bed but this was too cute to not share.

I went to see Paige today, and she’s doing a lot better, but… Still hard to see your sister in the hospital, right? Well, I haven’t seen her in ages, and just like me, her hair’s gotten really long. It’s just a little shorter than mine, tbh.

Well, just like me, she’s constantly playing with it and flipping it over her right shoulder. Yet another sister trait we share - along with matching birthmarks on our feet and the fact that we only drink coffee with a chocolate base.

So I busted out the camera and showed her a few pics of Lola, and what does she do? Gets up really close to see what the picture is of, and when she sees it’s a cat, she starts stroking the screen like she’s petting the picture.

Then, I was texting Jenni, and Paige kept holding her hand out and moving her thumbs like, “Hey, my turn!” so I handed it over and she totally texted her… Granted, she can’t read or write, so it was just gibberish, but… She was so proud, man.

One great thing about having a developmentally disabled sister - it’s the little things in life that make them happy. She’s 25 years old, but if she skins her knee, you can fix the boo boo with a kiss.

I just can’t wait to see her back to normal, you know? She wasn’t nearly as full of piss and vinegar as she normally is… She’s getting there, though!

Apparently, in the commentary for Rewind, it’s said that Mike is 22, and I believe that this is 100% wrong, and I can prove it. Here, I’ll show you.

Mike’s parents died in 1992 (2.11), when he was 11 (2.01, 2.10).

1992-11=1981. <—- canon parent deaths to birthdate

According to the commentary, in the flashback in Rewind (which was set in 2007), Mike is 22. Since the flashback was 5 years ago, we can figure out how old he’d approximately be today and when he was born according to the commentary age.

2007+5=2012 <—- flashback to present day

22+5=27 <—- flashback age to present day age according to the commentary

2007-22=1985 <—- flashback commentary age to birthdate

1981=/=1985.

Whatever was said in the commentary in regards to Mike being 22 is wrong. The math doesn’t add up, and there’s no way that Mike can be 27 in canon according to the information we’ve already been given.

I’m not trying to say that my headcanon is right, ok? It’s a HEADcanon. What I’m saying is that what was said in the commentary IS NOT RIGHT. I’m not being arrogant, I’m not trying to say my headcanon must be followed, I’m not trying to be a dictator - I’m merely pointing out a major discrepancy in commentary versus canon.

The numbers do not add up. Mike cannot be 22 in 2007 if he was 11 years old when his parents died in 1992. Whatever they said in the commentary is wrong.

It doesn’t matter what year the show is set in, or what timelines we’re working with. This is basic addition and subtraction, and the numbers don’t add up.

eta: Keep crunching numbers and it turns out that Mike is 30/31 and Harvey’s 40/41.

I only care because I want to know so I can use it accurately in my fic. Otherwise it doesnt bother me the slightest how old he is or isnt. For what its worth, I would put him myself at 28. But thats just me.

But here’s the thing, Alli. What was said in the commentary doesn’t match up with his age in the show. That’s what’s bugging me, I mean… My headcanon is that he’s 31. I’ve crunched the numbers, and the very youngest he could be is 29, and that’s if they went with the original filming date of 2010. So really, he should be 30 - 32, and Patrick’s 31. Boom, there we go. But why are the writers saying no, he’s essentially 27 when it directly contradicts what they’ve already aired?

I want accuracy too! I spend way too much time analyzing this shit in order to ensure accuracy, and I’m just absolutely baffled that there’s this big of a gap!

i actually dont mind if mike is 30 or 27. i think the thing that bothers me the most is when (in fic), they write him as 24-25ish and younger. i know pjadams has a baby face thing going on, but no.

My issue with the age thing is that I’m OCD and a canon fact whore, and what is being said is directly contradicting with what happened in the show. I don’t care if he’s 27 or if he’s in his 30’s, but keep it constant and keep it accurate, and that’s not what’s going on here.

So, in Rewind did we ever get an actual confirmation that he was 22, or was that just on Rachel?If he was 27 then, I have a hard time believing he spent THAT much time running around cheating and selling weed between college and meeting Harvey. >_>

No, it was in the Rewind commentary. Apparently, they said he was 22 in the flashback.

I can believe it. It took me until what, 26 to get my shit together? The only reason why I did is cuz I got busted. If you’re making that kind of money, you don’t feel like working outside of it, you’re set - your shit is taken care of, so why bother? You’re good. Yeah, as far as I can tell, that’s exactly what he’s saying in regards to the timeline. Time between eps is short, but it’s running in real time. Kind of screwy, but… Suspension of disbelief, anyone?

I’m basing Mike’s age off of what was said in 2.10 (he said he was 11 when his parents died) and 2.11 (he said that his parents died in 1992). That’s the exact canon information that’s in the show, I rewatched those parts of the episode before I posted my first comment. That’s where my beef is. His numbers aren’t adding up.

In the commentary, either one of the writers or Korsh said that Mike was 22. I haven’t heard the commentary. I’m going off of what Kate said it was, and she was the one that had the original post in the first place. The numbers aren’t adding up according to the information we have in canon, it’s off by 3 to 5 years. H’ed have been born in 1985 if he was 22 in 2007, and that’d mean that he was 7 when his parents died - NOT 11, as Mike said in High Noon.

I think the whole age mix up thing probably does boil down to some sort of miscommunication in the writer's room. Like maybe Korsh has in his head a timeline but Erica (another writer) has like a different timeline, and they all just thought maybe they were all operating under the same timeline? It does suck for fandom cause you wanna be accurate about details etc and the discrepancies make it harder :/ Or maybe they just don't think we'll notice lol?!

I think that’s most likely what’s going on. I know it was Korsh and one of the writers that were the ones to say Mike was 27, though, and that’s where things go screwy. I really don’t know. I’m going off of what I’ve heard from people who’ve heard the DVDs, and I can’t break them down myself until I get them, ya know?

I’m going to keep going with canon that I’ve actually seen and heard with my own eyes, though. As awesome as Korsh is, he’s made a lot of comments about canon that don’t seem to fit in, and I don’t take what he says as the gospel truth because of that. There’s some things that he says that just don’t add up, and until I see it in the show, I kind of view it as loose canon rather than concrete.

I mean, look at what’s going on here with this whole age debate. He’s directly contradicting what is said in the show during episodes 2.10 and 2.11. I know, I double checked just before I posted my first reply.

I’m going to wait to hear the commentary myself, and then i’m gonna ask him and see if I can’t get an actual answer, cuz this is honestly going to bother the shit out of me.

Did you see the comments I added to that age post? Also, this whole thing reminds me of what happened with House. Not sure if you ever watched it, but they totally butchered the timeline/ages & finally the writer came out on Twitter and admitted they didn't keep a show "bible" on that stuff and knew they'd fucked it all up.

Yeah, I think that there’s some miscommunication going on in the writers room or something, because something’s really hinky here. You shouldn’t be that far off. Even if you adjust for the weird ass timeline, there’s still at least a 3 year discrepancy there. Especially in that time range in your 20’s, that’s when you’re really cementing who you are - especially if you get sidetracked in your 20’s. I seem to recall Patrick saying Mike was 28 at some point before the second season? I don’t remember, no sources rn so don’t quote me.

Never got into House, but… This is sounding awfully familiar, ngl. I just HATE it when canon isn’t clear, or when what showrunners are saying aren’t concurrent with canon. Like… I know he’s not there all the time, but I’m already seeing plot holes that would emerge from this.

Come on, man. We have fic to write, let us do you justice by giving us the right info and sticking to it.

The problem is, Korsh has the timeline for season 1 to the half season finale at 6 months - SIX. S2.5 picks up less than a week later, and now season three is going to start 3 days after War.

WHY DOES FANDOM HAVE A BETTER GRASP ON CANON THAN THE WRITERS. And which one do we go with? The actual show canon? Or the commentary canon?
